The Reading Bandwagon: Unfolding the Phonics Pradigm

“Letter a/ produces the aaa sound”

“A for ? Which prophet ? Adam AS!”

Should you peek inside our home on a sunny afternoon you will find us deep immersed in one of our heartwarming story books from our white Kallax shelf. Our heads buried deep into the books whilst our faces sun kissed from the afternoon sunlight beaming from the toy room window panes.

Story time sessions. Bring them on.

Early readers are early readers because you ignite in them the love for reading. How do you really ignite the passion for reading ?

By reading yourself.

I never studied phonics myself in school. Home educating my daughter the phonics of the English alphabets was a challenging bit. We started from learning the alphabets first. Afterwards, we learnt the sounds of the alphabets. The sounds of the alphabets are funny and comical much to my liking.

The sound of letter e should be eeeee but it really is eh. Who could have guessed? Definitely not me! The sound of letter Z should be buzzzzzzz however it is zeeee. Hilarious!

Your child will nevertheless read with or without phonics but with the correct foundation of phonics bit the understanding of the reading and writing skills will be proficient Insha Allah.

We also did lots of alphabet activities to reinforce what comes from particular letters. I kept the plethora in a green file to forever cherish the messy crafty hours we have embraced education in our home. This further helped in the identification of the letters. Moreover , the vocabulary expansion also occurred. Masha Allah.

Once the sounds of the alphabets were known, we then moved to learn some sight words that helped build the sentences. Common sight words may include (and not limited to) the,I,at,a,and and or. The list can be shortened according to the child’s interest per se. From here we then started to read simple sentences.

Lo and behold you are finally an early reader in your kindy homeschool.

How has been your reading journey and which route have you opted ?
