Post Ramadan Reflections: 5 Ways to Instill Goodness in Kids

The feeling of acceptance, inclusivity and extending kindness breeds and flourish in Ramadan than no other month.

We made it a point to nourish our home education to inculcate the understanding of the purpose and aim of Ramadan this month. Below are 5 ways we catered to foster goodness this month;

1) Preparing the Read aloud Basket

We made our first book basket this year for Ramadan. It helped us focus on what to read in this month. We included the following books ,

Elias explains angels

Sahabah stories by Safwah Publications

Migo & Ali by Zainab Mian

The Silent Witness by Safwah Publications

Anthology of Stories & Poems by Homeschoolers around the world compiled by Emma Halim, Rizwana Anwar and Nadia Jenkins.

30 Hadith for kids by Zanib Mian

Ramadan Rocket by Emma Halim

2) Talking About virtues of Fasting

This whole month when we kept fast, we talked about that. Lo saw I did not eat when she was eating. That began the beginning for her to ask the whys of fasting. She asked curious questions Masha Allah around suhoor.

“Why would you wake up in the middle of the night to eat?“

“Will you wake me up too?”

“Your mouth stinks but that’s the good smell!” “Because Allah loves it.”

“I would keep half roza!” , she had insisted daily.

3) Playing Sous Chef in the kitchen

Forever thirsty to have the first glass of Aftar drink, bites of crackers, their favourite pooris and beautiful kiwis Lo loved to play sous chef.

Involving kids in the kitchen is also a great way to foster the comprehension of the significance of Ramadan. While helping in preparing aftar, they learn the why of aftar preparation and they also tend to understand the nutritional benefit of certain foods.

4) Making a Kindness Jar

This year we made a kindness jar, the jar was filled with lots of kindness prompts. Each day we had picked one prompt and proceeded to do the kind act within the family. Doing this small activity helped in understanding the concept of extending kindness and empathy.

5) Making a Sadqah Jar

We also made a sadqah jar prior, so this month we practically reinforced the concept of giving charity in Ramadan to the needy. This helped understanding how important it is to give sadaqah from your own hands.

And the joy it brings to heart is a complete different story…! Why?

Because I saw Lo hopping and running around the house after extending her sadqah.
